Final 2011 Conference Rankings

31 Aug

Now that the 2012 college football season has officially started, I’ll go ahead and announce the final objective college football conference rankings for 2011.  Yes, there was movement and a record-setting score from the top conference in America.  The media loves to talk about how great the SEC is, and they are very good, but they weren’t the number one conference in the country in 2011.  That honor goes to the Big 12 with a whopping score of 1.805!  The previous record was 1.517 by the SEC in 2009.

So here is what we learn about the 2011 national championship game.  It pitted the top two teams from the second best conference in the country.  The champion of the best conference in the country was left out of the championship game.  No more comment needed.

It was this year that theBig East Conference was once again raided and imploded with the defection of West Virginia University and the soon defections of Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC.  That conference, which has been so maligned by sports media and whose strength is constantly questioned, finished as the third ranked conference in 2011.

On a final note, congratulations must be extended to the Sun Belt Conference for not finishing last as they had done every year since these rankings have been compiled.  That dubious honor now belongs to the WAC.  It was announced not long ago that the WAC will be put out of its misery after this year as the college football landscape continues to change.  Long live college football!
